Homestay Thekkady

1 - Elathottam

Ela’ is short for ‘elakka’ which means cardamom and ‘thottam’ translates to the word plantation. And that’s just what Elathottam is – a home stay on a fully operational cardamom estate perched at a height of over 4100 feet above sea level.

Getting There

Any visit to India would be incomplete without a little sojourn into ‘Gods own country’, Kerala. Located at the southern tip of India, Kerala is a fast emerging tourist destination and holiday spot. In the heart of Central Kerala is a dense tropical forest called the Periyar Tiger Reserve

Known for its abundant wildlife and lush vegetation, the Periyar Wildlife Reserve in Thekkady, is a tourist’s delight. 10 kms before Thekkady, bordering the Periyar Tiger Reserve, a little path diverges from the main road and disappears through a labyrinth of trees. A dirt track hewn into the side of the mountain takes you high up into the clouds right up to Elathottam, or Mullayar Estate (Top), as its been called for the last 5 decades. So, if you’re asking for directions, be sure to ask for Mullayar Estate(Top).

 The Estate Bungalow

In a little clearing in the heart of the estate is a quaint little cottage, built over half a century ago out of granite and still used as an estate bungalow. Besides its old world charm and rustic simplicity, the cottage offers a ringside view of vast stretches of soft clouds, thickly layered atop verdant hilltops. Spectacular vistas of endlessly undulating slopes; unforgettable sunsets and sunrises; undisturbed tranquility and unparalleled oneness with nature; Elathottam is a veritable Paradise amidst misty and mountainous surroundings.

A Quick Tour
Lush fronds thickly laden with ripe cardamom bedeck every trail you take through this estate. A short descent through these broad leafed bushes brings you to a sparkling fish pond. Carefully culled out of granite and stone, here’s where you can enjoy peaceful hours of utter serenity with only the geese for company and the reflection of the deep blue sky in the stillness of the water. An exciting ride down almost 1000 feet in an open SUV leads you to yet another breathtaking sight – a water reservoir that is almost 34 feet deep. Numerous shoals of gliding fish make this a perfect venue for a lazy afternoon of quiet angling. The world is a very different place beside these emerald waters.

Accomodation

Large and spacious bedrooms with well appointed attached bathrooms provide all the essentials for a comfortable holiday here. There are two bedrooms available in the cottage for visiting guests. Bookings can be made either on a Single, Double or Twin sharing basis. The attached bathrooms have both running hot and cold water. The sparkling facilities add the perfect touch of luxurious living to this otherwise rustic experience. An intimate dining room is the perfect setting for many an exotic meal fragrant with the flavours and aromas of local cuisine and hospitality. Enjoy peaceful evenings on the patio with only the receding sounds of the setting sun to sustain your solitude. Catch up on all the reading you’ve been putting off, or simply enjoy the company of your thoughts.

So what’s a holiday without a feast or two for the hungry palate? Authentic local fare cooked with fresh, farm grown vegetables and fruits. Fish and meat sourced fresh everyday from the village market and cooked to perfection. Sizzling barbecues to add to the enchantment of misty evenings spent in the silence of the land.

During your stay here at Elathottam, we have planned all sorts of exciting activities for you. So close to nature, come with us while we take you on a journey of exploration and discovery into the very heart of the land.

1

Bird watching will prove immensely fulfilling what with innumerable varieties of birds flitting in and out of sight.

2

An exciting Jeep Safari through treacherous tracks in an open SUV down almost 1000 feet to the serene beauty of a water reservoir, almost 34 feet deep.

4

Afternoons of quiet angling beside the water’s edge. The fish are sure to oblige!

5

Viewing the world from a different perspective; atop a tree house built on the highest spot of the property. But you have to trek through hilly terrain to get there.

6

Learn the art of cardamom farming from the tribals. So what if you don’t understand their language, their hands will do the talking.

3 - Plantation Bungalo

Kerala history is closely linked with its commerce, which in turn was wholly dependent until recent times on its spice trade. Kerala was known for its spices and travellers from around the world  visited to trade and to gain control over this rich land. The first  travellers  were the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs  and the Chinese;  later-day traders included the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French and the British. It is  believed  that the spice trade dates back to three thousand years and was responsible for Vasco da Gama’s quest for the Indian  subcontinent, and its  discovery via a sea route. Pepper still remains the king of Kerala’s spices , but the state also has a very rich produce in cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, ginger and turmeric;  it has a rich cultivation of cashew nuts, and is India’s native state for coconut !

As in the past, the state continues to be the spice capital of the world. Visitors to Kerala, especially the tourists, prefer to see for themselves how the different spices are grown, harvested, processed and packed.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
The PERIYAR WILD LIFE SANCTUARY at Thekkady is a preserved stretch of dense, evergree rainforests that strudels the tiny state of Kerala on the southwestern tip of the Indian peninsula. Sandwiched between the mighty Western Ghat mountain ranges and the shimmering Arabian sea, at over 2800feet above MSL,here's an idyllic retreat that offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the thrill of close encounters with the wildness

Pleasantly cool, with the invigorating chill of unpolluted mountain air, here's a sublime escape from the cloister of concrete! The stimulating aroma of spices, the mating call of a bull-elephant, the unceasing tempo of trilling crickets, the honey-dewed perfection of vivid wild flowers, the noisy frolic of babbling baboons and fairy lights of millions of fireflies lighting up the night. Get mesmerized! Abounding in evergreen flora, trees entwined with pepper vines graciously reaching up towards the sky, a veritable orchestra of birdcalls and animal cries. A wholly back-to-the-basics experience. Offering you an opportunity to refresh rejuvenate, re-discover yourself . Theyyam is an artistic dance form where metaphysical thoughts and expressions of immortal souls are impersonated to a believer through a mortal body. Theyyam originated from "Kaliyattam" once practiced   by   the   tribal   community   of   north   Kerala.

Theyyam  had grown to the present form through many transformations since it’s origin. Landlords and chieftains of those days are the main forces behind many of such transformations. The community and its body began to use this art to propagate the major theme of social enforcement. The artists are also encouraged by the authorities to introduce new themes into its traditional layers and classified different acts and expressions to match specific needs for their desire.

Thiruvathirakali, also known as Kaikottikkali, is a very popular group dance of Kerala. Thiruvathirakali is performed by the women of Hindu community, often during festive seasons like Onam and the Thiruvathira day in the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December- January). Performed by maids in order to attain everlasting marital bliss, Thiruvathirakali is a simple and gentle dance with the lasya element or the amorous charm predominating. The dance is performed around a nilavilakku (a ceremonial lamp) or a floral decoration especially during Onam. The dancers move in a circular pattern, accompanied by rhythmic clapping of the hands, to the tune of the Thiruvathira pattu. One of the performers sings the first line of the Thiruvathira pattu (song) while the rest repeat it in chorus. The songs are often narrations from the folk epics.Today, Thiruvathirakali has become a popular dance form for all seasons and also a popular stage item.
