Mesmerising Munnar
The tea-and-spice town of Munnar is one of the compelling attractions of Kerala, and was voted the second best tourism destination in Asia after Tokyo by TripAdvisor's 2010 Traveler's Choice Destination Awards. This holiday town in the Western Ghats soars 6,000 feet above the languid backwaters of Kerala and is overwhelmingly green. All roads in Munnar either wind along high-altitude shola forests, rolling slopes of tea plantations or large stretches of spice plantations.

There are about 30 tea plantations in and around Munnar. Tea bushes are planted along the land’s natural contours, and when you wedge yourself amidst them for a photograph, you appear as a barely noticeable blip on a green background. Tea pickers in colourful clothes and baskets on their backs are barely visible amidst the sea of tea plants; each person plucks as much as 25-30 kilograms of tea leaves per day. Four kilograms of green leaf make 1 kilogram of black tea that goes into the making of your morning cup.

The spice plantations are less dense and more fruit laden. Over 12 varieties of spices -- including ginger, garlic, cardamom, vanilla, pepper, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg -- are cultivated in and around Munnar. Guided visits to these plantations are absolutely fascinating; it’s delightful to see the spices that you use every day in their raw, natural form rather than bottled or packaged in plastic.

Whether it’s the tea and spice plantations, the lakes and waterfalls, the cattle breeding farms, or the sky-piercing Anamudi peak within the Eravikulam National Park, every part of Munnar accentuates its beauty. Munnar truly complements Kerala, a place that truly deserves its exalted title of ‘God’s Own Country’.

·         • Trekking – Waterfall-Trekking, River-Trekking – Anamudi, Rajamalai, Atukkad, Meesapulimala, Kundala and Devikulam are just a few of the trekking sites in and around Munnar. The cool pleasant climate and the lush greenery make trekking a very inviting prospect in Munnar.

·         •  Boating – Mattuppetty, Sita Devi, Kundala, Anayirangal and other lakes offer excellent boating opportunities with pedal boats and speedboats.

·          • Horse-riding – The idyllic paths of Munnar offer an excellent opportunity for horse-riding. Horses are available for hire around Mattupetty dam and other places.

·          • Rock Climbing and Rappelling – Munnar has a steep rock face of about 100 feet where rock climbing and rappelling are organised.

Fort  Munnar

Munnar – The Perfect Shot
Munnar is an idyllic hill station situated in Idukki district in Kerala, which is a perfect shot. The name Munnar means three rivers in Malayalam because of the confluence of three rivers Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. It is nestled amidst the lush green hills of the Annamalai Ranges, with south India's highest peak Anamudi. It became popular with the erstwhile English rulers as a summer retreat. Renowned for the tea estates and the salubrious climate; it is one of the few places where the natural beauty persists like Classic Movies. The never-ending expanse of tea plantations, magnificent mountains, pristine valleys, exotic species of flora and fauna, winding lanes, and the spice flavoured cool air are something which you’ll cherish forever. For the nature enthusiast there are many visual delights in the nearby sanctuaries. Apart from the scenic beauty, there are umpteen activities or stunts, which you can indulge in boating, trekking, camping, and wildlife safaris. When you are in Munnar, the Munnar Tea Museum is a place, which you cannot afford to miss. Set up by the Indian conglomerate Tata, it has a vast collection of old photographs, equipments, curios and other artifacts used for the processing of tea. It also displays the various techniques of tea production and refinement. Another interesting feature of this museum is that it exhibits an amazing variety of antique bungalow furniture, ancient typewriters, wooden tubs, ancient magneto phones, to mention a few. You can lose yourselves in the bygone era of the black and white.

If you are a shopaholic, then the best things to buy are tea, coffee, and spices like cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and pepper.

Camelot Resor

The most popular tourist destination in Kerala is Munnar, situated at the confluence of three mountain rivulets, at a height of 1600 metres. It was the summer resort of the British Raj in South India. Miles and miles of manicured tea gardens, cardamom-planted woodlands, vast grasslands covering dome-shaped hills, exotic flora and fauna and ubiquitous brooks and silvery waterfalls all combine to give the visitor an otherworldly feeling. The combination of the visual extravaganza, exhilarating climate and warm hospitality is unique to this remote hill station.

Camelot Resort Munnar

As its name implies, Camelot is an idyllic, pleasing and picturesque spot of natural simplicity and happiness. Truly, the spirit of King Arthur must be hovering over this place, blissfully forgetting the time gap of 15 centuries and the distance of thousands of miles. The Resort is far enough to shut out the hustle and bustle of Munnar town and close enough to reach it in 15 minutes flat in a jeep/bike.

Just wandering in and around the resort premises, you can sight dozens of rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. Animals like elephants, bison, wild dogs and wild boars are often sighted in the mornings and evenings.

Birds like black birds, kites, hornbills and many smaller varieties are frequent visitors. Rare insects like the Atlas Moth are seen in abundance. Wild orchids, giant tree ferns, rhododendrons, etc. are also in plenty around the place.

All around the resort, the tea, coffee, cardamom and pepper plantations remind us that we are in the heartland of the spice capital of the world. For a closer look, any number of specimens of these plants can be seen inside the resort property itself, and a well-kept vegetable farm with all varieties of endemic vegetables is close by.

The Camelot Rock View Point, within the property, is just 150 metres up along a longer trekking route. From this point you can see 9 estate mountains: Kannimala, Rajamala, Kallar, Nallathanny, Nyamakad, Vagavarai, Silent Valley, Parvathy and Lekshmi. You can also clearly see Anamudi the highest peak south of the Himalayas.

The Camelot Trekking Pinnacle, a special trekking spot up 1000 metres, above the property, can be reached after 4 hours of arduous climb. But the effort is worth, if the climate is favourable, as the viewpoint will give you a birds-eye view of the high ranges all around, and even a distant view of Kochi city, the 'Queen of the Arabian Sea'. For the long trek to the Camelot Trekking Pinnacle and for jungle safaris, necessary accessories and medicines will be supplied.

The resort has its own micro hydroelectric power source and water supply. The natural clear mineral water collected from a perennial stream, filtered and supplied hygienically is safe and tasty. Bottled mineral water is also bought in sufficient quantities and stocked. You will experience solitary seclusion that will revitalize you for years to come.

Tea County

Munnar - enchanting mist clad hills

Quaint cottages, fragrant tea gardens and mist-draped mornings are hallmarks of Munnar. For years the cool and picturesque town of Munnar was the summer retreat of the British and it still retains the charm of a colonial past. The destination is home to the only sandalwood forest in Kerala and is also famous for its exotic flora and fauna. The Nilgiri tahr (mountain goat), the grizzled giant squirrel and the once-in-twelve-year blooming wonder - Neelakurinji flower (Strobilantheskunthiana) are special to Munnar
Tea County - host numero uno in Munnar
Cosily nestled right in the middle of two hills is Tea County, your official host in Munnar. Here, every room offers mesmerizing views. You can enjoy the mist rolling down in the warmth of luxuriously furnished rooms. And it is literally a honeymooner's paradise. Those who want to venture out may bicycle down mountain trails, paraglide over the valleys, go trekking, climb rocks, try to catch a rainbow trout or spend a day in a tea plantation. This is also an important location for ecotourism activities especially centered around Eravikulam National Park, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and shola forests like Pampadum Shola National Park and the newly created Neelakurinji Sanctuary. There are opportunities to sight wild animals especially Nilgiri tahr (mountain goat), elephant, bison etc.

Blackberry Hills
A typical Kerala hill-side village

A set of cute cottages nestling against the backdrop of Western Ghats cut off from the hubbubs of habitual life. Blackberry Hills offers you a magnificent view of Sahya Mountain Ranges. A winding pathway leads you to the privacy of your ethnic cottage furnished to tempt you.

Watch the spectacular sunrise through your bedroom window, or sunset from your balcony. Feel the life flourishing in the far-flung plantation village of the valley below. Catch the clouds with one hand while plucking black plum with the other.

See how palpable the climate is! Time comes to a stand still at Blackberry Hills. Days are incredibly snail paced. And you definitely turn out to be the monarch of all your survey.

Gist of Blackberry Hills

Walk down along the steep pathways of Blackberry Estate to a nest next to that of sparrows. Your cottage is one among a cluster of houses designed to remind you of ethnic Kerala architecture... Privacy is the password!

Walk into the cute cottage.  Before getting enough time to admire the fine furniture and great works of ethnic paintings on the wall, you are drawn to the balcony, facing a vast valley, from where you can watch the mountains whisper sweet nothings to the mist-drenched valley…a balcony from where you can watch Munnar in its entirety.  Its tea plantations, water falls, tropical forests….

Magic of Mountain Gods

The vast plantation visible from your balcony is Pallivasal Tea Estate, the largest of 22 tea estates in Munnar.  The valley is almost like a big basin and your cottage is on the edge of it.  A gap in the far west end permits mist to flow-in and wind carries it like cotton.  The mist, the wind, tricks of naughty tropical sun and the shadow of the mountain peaks create an ever changing cosmic experience known as The Magic of Mountain Gods.

Pinch of History
“Surprisingly grand and incomparably beautiful” General Douglas Hamilton noted down in his diary on his visit to Munnar in the year 1862. Duke of Wellington, Sir Arthur Wellesley was perhaps the first to visit Munnar from the “civilized” world in connection with his strategic move to defend Bristish India from Tipu Sultan in the year 1789. Adventurous planters from Scotland followed and experimented several crops including rubber, coffee, cinchona, camphor and sisal. Finally tea was found to be most suitable. The first tea was planted by Mr. A.H.Sharp in the year 1895. Cardamom, the king of spices was known to the world from ancient times, was a wild plant abundant in the tropical forests of Munnar. Adivasis (ethnic people) collected the hill produce and changed hands till it reached distance ports like Alexandria.

When Blackberry Estate was taken over by a team of environmentalists, it was a neglected cardamom plantation thoroughly damaged by the so called modern farming techniques.  During the last decade, organic farming was adopted and agricultural activity was limited to 25% of the total land.  A simple grass called vetiver is extensively used  for a multiple purposes including land stabilization, water purification, water conservation etc.  You can learn the new technology of farming without causing sheet erosion in a slope in our agricultural farm.

You will be amazed by the variety of tropical plants and trees at Blackberry Estate.  The message we try to pass from here is “co-existence of all plants, trees, insects and other creatures in a truly sustainable world”.  The souvenir we request our guests to carry is a tiller of vetiver which is offered free from Blackberry Estat

Wild Elephant Resort

When the snow falls and muffles all other sounds , there is a peaceful silence that descends upon this lush green landscape. Munnar is a small hill station, located
4500 ft above sea level in a serene location surrounded by coffee plantations . Beside this endless expense of green is the solitary Mankulam waterfalls. A historic tourist spot which has recently been voted the second best holiday destination in Asia by the Massachusetts – based travel guide and research website TripAdvisor

A sustainable holiday resort that blends seamlessly into the surrounding greenery featuring a hilltop of tea plantations and water falls . Located on an untouched hill top distinguished for nature lovers , the resort looks like it hides under the lush green hill top that has been pulled up as a blanket.

Aesthetically designed , we house 15 cottages , a restaurant, a pool, and parking lot . All of this undoubtedly succeeds in its mission of leaving the natural landscape absolutely untouched.
